Job Summary

Performs variety of duties as a sworn peace officer related to the protection of life and property, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, prevention of crime, preservation of the public peace, apprehension of suspected law violators, and the rendering of aid or service in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the GSU Division of Public Safety. Assists the shift sergeant with first line supervisory responsibilities and provides field assistance to personnel. Acts in the capacity of a sergeant in the absence of, or at the direction of the sergeant.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. A CSA individual who, by virtue of their responsibilities, is designated to receive and obligated to report criminal incidents to the institution's Clery Coordinator for publication in the Annual Security Report.

This position involves shift work based on the needs of GSU and Division of Public Safety. Employees must have the ability to work flexible shift hours and schedules that include holidays. Employees may be required to remain on duty beyond a normal shift and must be available to report for duty without prior notice due to on-call status, special events, emergencies, or personnel shortages.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties outlined in the police officer job description
  • Assist field training officers with the supervision, training, evaluation, and mentoring of entry-level police officers; provide guidance and support to subordinate personnel
  • As directed by the sergeant, directs, and supervises subordinate personnel; in the absence of a sergeant, performs the duties and responsibilities of a police sergeant
  • Monitor work activities and assists sergeant with periodic personnel and equipment inspections to ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, and directives
  • Initiate and/or authorize the issuance of Eagle Alert - Emergency Notifications in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Act
  • Fulfill annual professional development/training requirements as prescribed by the Georgia P.O.S.T. Council, Georgia Southern University, and the Division of Public Safety
  • Promote positive campus relations through delivery of crime prevention programming and active involvement in campus events

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Other Required Qualifications

  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Peace Officer Certification (in good standing)
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Supervision Certification
  • Georgia P.O.S.T. Field Training Officer Certification
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated (Class C or higher)

Required Experience

  • Three (3) or more years of related experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of requisite Georgia P.O.S.T. specialty / career development certifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or at least 30 semester hours of earned academic credit

Preferred Experience

  • Four (4) or more years of law enforcement experience

Proposed Salary

$22.36 - $27.95 per hour

This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.

  • Knowledge of university properties, population, and traffic control issues
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, general orders, and directives regarding conduct of personnel, field operations, critical incidents, preliminary investigations, and documentation / reporting protocols

SKILLS

  • Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relations skills
  • Skill in mentoring others to establish, align, and achieve organizational and work unit objectives, as well as to develop the performance of others
  • Skill in the delivery of public presentations on crime prevention and public safety topics
  • Skill in the use, care, and safe handling of firearms, intermediate weapons, and specialized law enforcement equipment
  • Skill in the safe operation and maneuvering of emergency response vehicles
  • Skill in administering CPR and emergency first aid
