Position Summary
The main purpose of the Police Corporal and the University Police department is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of UNC Asheville through law enforcement and crime prevention. The Police Corporal must possess knowledge and skills in the following areas: patrol operations, investigations, leadership and supervision, community policing, and communication skills.
In addition to upholding local, state, and federal laws, the Police Corporal will respond to and investigate crimes and accidents, as well as perform administrative tasks, provide training, and perform other specialized roles as designated by the department.
The Police Corporal will serve in an assistant supervisor capacity and will assist with supervision within the University Police department. This includes managing schedules to ensure growth and adequate staffing, reinforcing established work expectations, providing officer and scene management guidance, directing resources in support of department goals, evaluating performance, conducting shift briefings, reviewing reports completed during a shift, interpreting laws and policies, line and equipment inspections, and aiding in yearly performance evaluations.
In the absence of the Police Sergeant, the Police Corporal will serve as the acting supervisor. The Corporal is responsible for general call response and police duties during their regularly assigned shift.
