Police Dispatcher
Job Summary
The Lamar University Police Department (LUPD) is seeking a dependable and professional Police Dispatcher to join our team in a part-time capacity. Dispatchers are responsible for the general operation of the Communications Center, including answering emergency and non-emergency calls, coordinating responses, and monitoring campus safety systems. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Essential Job Functions
What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities
- Operate department two-way radio equipment and maintain radio logs
- Answer telephone calls and provide accurate information to callers
- Determine when calls require emergency action and relay critical information to patrol units
- Coordinate police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency responses
- Monitor alarm systems for unauthorized entry to university buildings
- Operate computer terminals for record-keeping and dispatching
- Maintain compliance with university standards, policies, and procedures
- Provide excellent customer service and promote positive public relations
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Experience or training sufficient to perform dispatch duties
- Ability to read and interpret departmental policies, regulations, and reports
- Knowledge of computers and two-way radio operation
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and exercise sound judgment
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, and emergencies as needed
- Requires sitting for extended periods and responding to calls in real-time
- Night, weekend, and emergency shift work required
Certifications Required
Must successfully complete 40-hour TLETS – Basic Telecommunications and TCIC/NCIC procedure training within one year of appointment, as determined by the Texas Department of Public Safety
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous dispatch or law enforcement communications experience
- Familiarity with university or campus environments
