Job Summary

The position is responsible for assisting in directing the public safety operations of Gordon State College.

Responsibilities

  • Manages department personnel in the provision of services to students, faculty, staff, parents and visitors.
  • Oversees the department’s Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) operations; maintains Terminal Agency Coordinator certification.
  • Answers telephones and dispatches officers and student workers to assist students and college employees.
  • Takes police reports.
  • Directs the college’s parking operations, overseas the processing of fees, fines and vehicle registrations.
  • Processes criminal history for other college departments.
  • Reviews daily police reports.
  • Develops and presents training instruction to staff and other campus constituencies.
  • Responds to critical incidents.
  • Manages and maintains all public safety equipment and software programs.
  • Directs the investigation of reported crimes.
  • Assists the Chief of Police in the planning for special events.
  • Analyzes department personnel, policies, and trends and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintains officer training records, coordinates opportunities for officer training.
  • Prepares the NIBRS (National Incident Based Reporting System) reporting.
  • Conducts reviews of body worn cameras for all Department personnel.
  • Assists the Chief of Police in reviewing and approving department payroll.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Five years (5) of continuous full-time service as a P.O.S.T. certified Police Officer.
  • Three years (3) of supervisory experience at the level of sergeant or above.
  • Must possess a current, valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain GCIC/NCIC certification.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the following background checks: Position of Trust + Credit Check, Motor Vehicle Record, Physical Examination, Drug Testing, Psychological Evaluation.

  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness, response and recovery principles.
  • Knowledge of public safety principles related to college campuses.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt (salaried) staff position and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
