Richard Bland College (RBC) is a two-year, residential liberal arts institution dedicated to preparing students for successful transfer to top-ranked colleges and universities. Often described as a hidden gem, RBC is located just outside the Tri-Cities area and offers a picturesque rural campus spanning more than 750 acres of wetlands, wooded landscapes, and the Commonwealth's oldest and largest pecan grove.
The Department of Campus Safety & Police at Richard Bland College is seeking a DCJS-certified, experienced police officer to join our team in a part-time capacity. This is an excellent opportunity for a law enforcement professional who values community engagement and campus-based policing in a close-knit academic environment.

Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Police Captain, this position is responsible for protecting the Richard Bland College community through the enforcement of Virginia state laws and College policies. Duties include comprehensive patrols within the department's statutory jurisdiction, emergency medical response, traffic enforcement, incident investigation, and active participation in campus and community policing efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrol campus property to ensure the safety of students, employees, and visitors
- Enforce Commonwealth of Virginia laws and College policies and regulations
- Respond to emergencies and provide emergency medical assistance
- Conduct traffic enforcement, accident response, and parking enforcement
- Investigate incidents and complete accurate, timely reports
- Participate in community engagement, outreach, and prevention initiatives
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of departmental and College missions
What We're Looking For
- Comprehensive knowledge of Virginia traffic and criminal laws and their application
- Demonstrated experience with investigative techniques, emergency procedures, and safety protocols
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
- Training and demonstrated competence as an emergency medical responder
- Strong time management, multitasking, leadership, and crisis management skills
- Proficiency in firearms handling and approved physical restraint techniques
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships and follow written and verbal directives
- Proficiency with personal computers and current software applications
- DCJS Law Enforcement Certification
- Ability to successfully complete the current DCJS Physical Ability Course
Additional Information
This position is designated as essential and may require reporting for duty during emergency situations or in response to institutional operation needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- Possess valid Virginia driver's license
- U. S. citizen
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- No convictions of felonies and/or serious misdemeanors
- Current certification as a law enforcement officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services
- Successfully pass all phases of the police officer selection process to include: physical agility test, extensive background investigation, MMPI, polygraph examination, interview, and a medical and drug screening by a physician.
Additional Considerations
- Law enforcement experience (preferred in a campus environment).
- Completed FEMA/NIMS IS-100, and IS-700
- Current certification in First Aid and CPR
