Position Summary
Police Officer - University Police Department of Public Safety and Transit Full Time
Primary Responsibilities
- Protects and serves the students, visitors, faculty, and staff of the Southeast Missouri State University campus
- Patrols and protects the properties, buildings and grounds of campus
- Investigates crimes for presentation to municipal and county attorneys for criminal prosecutions
- Responds to requests for service and campus emergencies
- Enforces student Code of Conduct and makes referrals to the Office of Student Conduct
- Conducts patrols and makes routine security checks of campus buildings
- Performs protective duties to provide police services in assigned areas of campus
- Provides safety and crime prevention education for the campus community
- Maintains a valid driver license
- Maintains Post certification
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; college coursework or degree a plus
- Must be Missouri POST certified or have completed an approved academy training program and become Missouri POST certified by first day of employment
- Must possess a valid Missouri driver license
- Must be available to work any hours, rotating shifts, days, nights, weekends and holidays; subject to call in as needed
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and organizational skills
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service and community policing philosophy
- Demonstrated sound judgement in handling sensitive situations with tact, discretion and confidentiality
Required Background Check
Must successfully pass all Assessments, Pre-Employment Testing, and Post-Offer Testing which at a minimum will include a criminal background check, polygraph exam and drug testing. Must be 21 years of age, a United States citizen, with no felony convictions of moral turpitude, or misdemeanor domestic violence convictions. Failure to pass will result in the employment offer being revoked.
