Overview

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Suicide Prevention

Jumpstart your professional career in suicide prevention working with national innovators at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School’s Center for Accelerating Practices to End Suicide (CAPES https://www.umassmed.edu/capes/). This 2-year post-doctoral fellowship focuses on suicide prevention across a range of settings, including the emergency department, inpatient medical settings, primary care, and outpatient mental health. This includes developing, studying, and integrating into practice cutting-edge e-health and m-health technologies, with a strong focus on suicide prevention and substance abuse treatment. Fellows will work on existing NIH-funded clinical and implementation studies and help with grant submissions. Fellows will be actively mentored to develop their own line of independent research, apply for mentored grants (e.g., F32 or K99 to NIH, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention postdoctoral fellowship or early career awards, or other postdoctoral level awards) and have opportunity for publications and presentations. 100% of past fellows have accepted faculty positions upon graduation. Current active research includes NIMH, CDC, NIDA, foundation, and state funded projects. Applicants with strong methodological, statistical, and quantitative experience are desirable.

Fellows will have opportunities to engage in working with healthcare systems on improving their suicide care pathways and will have opportunities for providing trainings and education across a range of settings, including within the medical school, graduate school of nursing, and residency programs both at UMass and with other Universities.

Fellows will have the opportunity to accrue supervised clinical hours to qualify for licensure. The fellow is encouraged and supported to obtain their license after their first year of training. Supervisors are committed to evidence-based practice and provide supervision across a variety of empirically supported treatments, including Acceptance-based therapies, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Health Psychology, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and mindfulness oriented therapies. Fellows are expected to identify intervention approaches they would like to receive training in and further develop those skills in the care of diverse patients.

Fellows will primarily work primarily with Edwin Boudreaux, PhD https://profiles.umassmed.edu/display/130048. Opportunities with other UMass faculty, including Rachel Davis-Martin, PhD https://profiles.umassmed.edu/display/18147553, Lourah Kelly, PhD https://profiles.umassmed.edu/display/36076065, Dan Mullin, PsyD, MPH, https://profiles.umassmed.edu/display/129980, and others are also available based on career aspirations of the fellow.
