The successful candidate will contribute to in-house research activities, the operation of the beamline, providing support to external users as local contact, and develop an independent research programme aligned with the scientific scope of the beamline and the ESRF research strategy.

The postdoctoral fellow will join the team responsible for the operation and continuous development of the ESRF beamline ID12, a world leading facility dedicated to the investigation of magnetic and electronic properties of matter exploiting polarization dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the hard X-ray energy range. ID12 enables experiments under a wide range of extreme conditions, including high magnetic fields, low temperatures and high pressures. A particular emphasis of the beamline's current development programme is the exploitation of the unique properties of the ESRF-EBS source. This includes the development of advanced experimental setups for the visualization of domain structures in functional materials using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Micrometric domains could be visualized with tightly focused X-ray beam, whereas a few tens of nanometer resolution could be achieved through coherent diffractive imaging, both as a function of magnetic field (up to 7 Tesla) and temperature (20-400 K).

Requirements:

• PhD in physics, chemistry, or materials science obtained less than 3 years ago
• A strong background in magnetism is required, previous experience in X-ray spectroscopy is an asset
• Experience in synchrotron radiation instrumentation is an advantage
• Team player and ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
• Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18-month period.
