Post Doctoral Research Associate in Probability

About us

King’s College London, founded in 1829, is one of the world’s leading universities, currently ranked 31st globally in the QS World University Rankings. The Department of Mathematics is based at the University’s Strand Campus in central London. Its research spans a wide range of areas, from pure to applied mathematics.

The newly created Probability Group is very active with a weekly seminar, regular reading groups or research roundtables, and takes part to the recently launched London Probability Days. It also fosters strong intradisciplinary ties with other departmental groups, including Analysis, Disordered Systems, Statistics, and Mathematical Data Science, and its members are well connected to leading international institutions.

The group’s research covers a broad spectrum of topics in both discrete and continuous probability. Recent areas of focus include random walks and percolation on strongly correlated structures, interacting particle systems, and mixing times of Markov chains, random graphs and trees, random matrix theory, stochastic and Lévy processes in infinite-dimensional spaces, free probability, random sphere packings in high dimensions.

About the role

You will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) Guillaume Conchon–Kerjan on the EPSRC project ‘New Phenomena for Random Walks in Dynamic Environments’ to deliver innovative research results in probability theory.

A good starting point to get familiar with the topic is the paper ‘Sharp threshold for the ballisticity of the random walk on the exclusion process’ (https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.02096 in revisions for JEMS).

You will also contribute to the research activity of the Probability group, and of the Department of Mathematics more widely, by taking part to seminars and events such as reading groups, as appropriate.

This is a research-only position, meaning that there are no teaching duties. However, you can volunteer for occasional teaching activities such as giving tutorials.

Please include a CV, a publication list (including preprints) and a research statement to your application. Ensure as well that two recommendation letters are sent to guillaume.conchon-kerjan@kcl.ac.uk by the 4th January 2026.

This is a full time (35 hours per week) post, and you will be offered a fixed term contract of 2 years: until 31/08/28 if starting on 01/09/26, but the start date can be as early as 01/04/26, and as late as November 2026, depending on the candidate.

Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. Visit the Centre for Research Staff Development for more information.
