Postal Assistant
Job Description
Postal Assistants work between 20 and 40 hours per week during the academic year to supplement and support the work performed by our full-time staff. Postal Assistants process incoming mail and packages then distribute them to specified locations, help us meet our schedules for the collection and return of mail, sort mail for delivery and arrange it in the correct delivery sequence, and answer customer questions about university mail services.
Postal Assistants also perform other duties as requested; take initiative to support a healthy work environment; strive to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplify the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and support the university's motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Standard work shifts with a variety start times are available depending on the work assignment. The tasks performed may change daily, depending on the volume of mail that day or team member absences. Applicants selected for one of these positions must be available to begin working during the last week of July.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- Previous experience communicating with or working with the public.
Licenses
- A valid driver's license with no restrictions.
Able to:
- Safely operate a delivery vehicle.
- Safely move and handle up to 70 lbs.
- Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb stairs.
- Perform repetitive movements of reaching, lifting, sorting, and carrying mail packages and boxes for extended periods.
- Work in close proximity to others and as part of a team
- Work daily in a variety of weather conditions.
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with record keeping; use of a personal computer and computerized mail management systems; sorting, correcting, and forwarding mail.
- Knowledge of USPS processes and procedures.
- Experience as a delivery driver.
- Comfortable driving a delivery van on the interstate.
