Postdoc in Advanced Thermal Sensing Materials and Devices

About us

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) at the University of Luxembourg contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine.
Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in.

Your role

The FACTS project is a successfully funded applied research project developing a new generation of compact, fast thermal sensing devices for demanding industrial and research environments. The work builds on an established platform and focuses on measurable performance gains, traceable calibration, and demonstrated stability under realistic operating conditions, with a clear route to industrial pilots and pre-series devices.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to drive the core R&D work that takes the technology from a validated baseline to a calibrated pre-series suitable for field pilots. The role combines experimental device R&D, modelling-supported design decisions, and rigorous measurement work. You will work closely with both academic and industrial supervisors in a small, execution-focused team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead experimental R&D on advanced material systems for thermal sensing devices
  • Use modelling and structured experimentation to select and converge on top-performing design variants
  • Build and characterize prototype devices and correlate results with model predictions
  • Run calibration work with documented uncertainty and reproducibility expectations
  • Execute stability and reliability testing under thermal loading and cycling
  • Maintain high-quality documentation, datasets, and internal reports suitable for industrial transfer
  • Contribute to publications and, where applicable, invention disclosures

Your profile

  • PhD in materials science, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field
  • Strong hands-on experimental skills with functional materials or device prototyping
  • Experience with quantitative measurements and data analysis
  • Ability to work independently, keep clean documentation, and deliver to milestones
  • Background in thermoelectrics, sensors, thin films, microfabrication, or related device physics
  • Experience with multiphysics modelling or experimental design of studies
  • Familiarity with calibration, metrology, or uncertainty evaluation
  • Prior collaboration with industry or applied R&D teams
  • Fluency in English is required; German is considered as a plus

We offer

  • Multilingual and international character. Modern institution with a personal atmosphere. Staff coming from 90 countries. Member of the "University of the Greater Region" (UniGR)
  • A modern and dynamic university. High-quality equipment. Close ties to the business world and to the Luxembourg labour market. A unique urban site with excellent infrastructure
  • A partner for society and industry. Cooperation with European institutions, innovative companies, the Financial Centre and with numerous non-academic partners such as ministries, local governments, associations, NGOs …
