Postdoc in Functional Single-Cell Analysis in the Cerebrospinal Fluid of patients with Neurological Diseases

Postdoc in Functional Single-Cell Analysis in the Cerebrospinal Fluid of patients with Neurological Diseases

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of functional single-cell analysis as per 01/02/2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position for 2 years.

The department of Biomedicine prioritises diversity and a good work environment, as this is a prerequisite for groundbreaking research. In a diverse and international research environment, dedicated employees are looking to generate new knowledge within biomedical research areas such as infection and inflammation, membranes, neuroscience and personalised medicine. The Department of Biomedicine provides research-based teaching of the highest quality and is responsible for a large part of the medical degree programme. Academic staff contribute to the teaching. English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The department employs approx. 500 people from all over the world, and they make use of the department's modern laboratory-, core- and animal facilities. The Department of Biomedicine focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration with business and industry, and numerous researchers from the department have established companies to develop new medicinal treatments founded in professional scientific basic research. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

About the research project

This project focuses on developing a novel, single-cell resolved approach to functionally analyze immune cells in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for improved understanding, diagnosis, and monitoring of neurological diseases. While current diagnostic methods rely heavily on bulk measurements (e.g., cytokines, cell counts), they fail to capture the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of central immune responses. Leveraging our expertise in droplet-based microfluidics, we aim to quantify functional immune cell activities — such as cytokine secretion and antibody production — directly at the single-cell level, even in low-cell-number CSF samples. Such a method would enable high-resolution immune profiling with potential application to diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), amongst others. The ultimate goal is to establish a flexible, multidimensional platform that can reveal disease-specific immune signatures, offering new avenues for early diagnosis and therapeutic insight. You will join a small, but highly motivated team already working in this direction.

Your job responsibilities

As Postdoc in the Eyer group, your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
  • Experimental execution from development to data analysis and interpretation.
  • Collaboration with Clinical and Research Partners.
  • Provide mentorship to junior researchers within the project.
  • Drive your own research and actively contribute to a collaborative culture.

You will report to Associate Professor Klaus Eyer, and you can expect individualized mentorship and regular scientific dialogue, an inclusive and respectful environment providing room and support for your interdisciplinary, professional and intellectual growth.

Your competences

You have academic qualifications at PhD level, for example within the following areas, biomedicine, immunology, neurology, medicine, biology, or other, related fields. Experiences in microfluidics or single-cell analysis are a plus, but not a prerequisite to learn our methods. An interest in developing (25%) and applying (75%) unique and novel methods is a must for this project, and good collaborative skills are essential. As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are inclusive and team-oriented and able to contribute to a good work environment. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.
