Postdoc in Recycling of Stainless Steel

Postdoc in Recycling of Stainless Steel

Are you passionate about sustainability and eager to make a global impact? Join us in our groundbreaking project to develop an innovative local recycling system in Denmark, setting a global standard for recycling practices.

The section for Manufacturing Engineering at DTU Construct is seeking a highly motivated postdoc (2 years) for a project on recycling of stainless-steel scrap. The project is carried out in close cooperation with Danish industries and researchers at the Technical University of Denmark and at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU).

In the project you will:

  • Investigate the behaviour of recycled materials in forming processes, addressing technical challenges and proposing innovative solutions.
  • Conduct tests at DTU Construct to document and demonstrate the optimal use of recycled metal in production.
  • Contribute to integrating our findings into industry practices, engineering education, and vocational training, fostering a sustainable future for stainless steel recycling in Denmark.

Join us in making a tangible difference and advancing the field of recycling. Your expertise and dedication can help shape a more sustainable and efficient recycling system, benefiting both industry and the environment.

You will collaborate closely and receive support from experts in manufacturing processes and metallurgy at DTU, lifecycle analysis experts at SDU, and engineers from the project's industrial partners.

We are looking for a candidate with a background in metal forming processes to explore direct recycling of stainless steel. The role involves testing formability, production uniformity, and geometric precision in production-like tests at DTU. The goal is to identify key production challenges in recycling and provide concrete recommendations for companies using these materials.

Responsibilities:

  • To design, conduct and analyse laboratory experiments
  • To cooperate with project partners (researchers and industries) to identify key issues that must be solved to improve recycling of materials in the industry
  • To communicate scientific results, orally and in writing, to both the scientific and the industrial communities
  • Contribute to better utilization of material in sheet metal forming
  • Identify scrap sheet metal that can be used to form other parts and demonstrate the possibilities experimentally
  • Evaluate robustness of forming when using scrapped sheet material as compared to using original sheet material.

Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in manufacturing, preferably in relation to metal forming processes
  • Good knowledge of metallurgy
  • Experience with planning and conducting experimental work
  • Excellent English proficiency in written and oral form.
  • The ability and willingness to share and discuss results from the project with both scientists and relevant industrial partners
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.
