Postdoc Position in Bone Marrow Tissue Engineering

Level of employment / Possible date of entry / Duration
100% / 01.01.2026 / 2 years

The Department of Biomedicine is a joint effort between the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel. It unites basic and clinical scientists to advance our understanding of health and disease and to develop pioneering therapies benefiting the lives of patients in areas of unmet need.
With more than 70 research groups and 800 employees, the Department of Biomedicine is the largest department at the University. We are located in the heart of Basel at 6 different locations. Be part of our future!

The Tissue Engineering Group at the Department of Biomedicine is currently seeking for a highly motivated and ambitious junior postdoc to work on the development and application of bone marrow tissue analogs to model and investigate human pathophysiological hematopoiesis.

Your position

In the context of a program funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the successful candidate is expected to carry out independently a project at the interface between hematopoiesis and tissue engineering, while cooperating with a PhD student working on the same program. The project aims at engineering organotypic 3D human bone marrow tissues and apply them as grafts in vivo to enhance the recovery of healthy hematopoiesis after chemotherapeutic damage in the context of hematopoietic malignancies. In this project, the candidate will work with human primary cells and perform cell culture experiments (in vitro), followed by experiments using murine models (in vivo).

Your profile

  • You obtained a PhD degree in cell biology (or equivalent) in the past 12 months and have a strong background in hematopoiesis and/or stem cell research.
  • You have robust experience in cell culture techniques, flow cytometry, microscopy and animal experimentation.
  • Having experience with in vivo (mouse) methods applied to study hematopoiesis, such as drug administration via i.p, s.c. and i.v., blood sampling, bone marrow transplantation, tissue harvest and s.c. implantations, is highly recommended.
  • Experience in routine molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA/Protein extraction, cloning and Q-PCR) and/or in transcriptomics/proteomics is a strong asset.
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills.

We offer you

The interdisciplinary Tissue Engineering Group in Basel, directed by Prof. Ivan Martin, generally aims at understanding mechanisms governing tissue regeneration and to translate this knowledge into innovative clinical approaches. In this environment, we offer you to take part on an exciting and collaborative project. The Department of Biomedicine offers an excellent research environment with world-class research facilities, ideal for building a scientific career. The city of Basel, located on the borders of both France and Germany, is one of leading pharmaceutical and biotechnological centers in the world.
