Offer Description
We are excited to announce a postdoctoral position within a project “Constraint-based analysis in Mechanics” (CVUT Starting Grant 2026 led by Ivan Gudoshnikov, Ph.D.). The project is directed towards mathematical modeling of irreversible mechanical processes, such as elastoplasticty (with strain hardening and softening), fracture and damage by the means of variational and quasi-variational inequalities, in particular, sweeping processes and their state-dependent generalizations. The goals of the project extend beyond proving the existence of a solution, and include analysis of problems, coming from specific mechanical models, limiting behavior analysis (shakedown theory with a mathematical level of rigor), applications of optimal control methods for sweeping processes, and topological analysis in the spirit of Hodge decomposition. To represent the spatial structure, we work in the setting of Partial Differential Equations for continuous bodies, as well as in the setting of discrete networks of springs (the so-called Lattice Spring Models). In the former setting, BV-, BD-, and measure-valued solutions play an important role of accounting for free discontinuities and localizations.
The prospective postdoctoral fellow is expected to:
- do mathematical research in the setting of variational inequalities / sweeping processes, involving the aspects of functional analysis, partial differential equations, Sobolev spaces, convex analysis, optimization, measure theory,
- be interested in mechanical applications to deformable bodies,
- contribute to writing and publishing of research papers in quality scientific journals,
- participate in the preparation of further project proposals.
Additionally, knowledge of any of the following topics would be an advantage:
- continuum mechanics (elasticity, plasticity, damage, fracture mechanics, granular and porous materials etc.),
- free discontinuity problems,
- prox-regular sets,
- constrained optimization, complementarity problems, semi-smooth Newton method,
- linear-algerbaic aspects of graph theory (see Bapat, “Graphs and matrices”), rigidity of graphs, Cayley-Menger variety,
- discrete exterior calculus, de Rham-type Hilbert complexes.
Programming skills with Python/NumPy or C++ are welcome, but they are not crucial for this position.
