By order issued by the Director General of the Telecommunications Institute on August 7, 2026, it was approved to open an international call to select one (1) candidate researcher in the scientific scope of the project AFAREDGE, under the scope of a term contract, with a termination date undetermined, overseen by Portuguese Labour Code. Job description:
- The proposed work focuses on supporting the design, implementation, and validation of security-related components in a distributed heterogeneous IoT platform, with emphasis on collaborative intrusion detection and adaptive trust-aware decision support. The work will include the development of detection and classification mechanisms for heterogeneous IoT and edge devices, the integration of security analytics into a federated and distributed workflow, and the evaluation of the resulting solutions in realistic use cases and scenarios. The candidate will also contribute to technical reporting, experimentation, validation, demonstration, and dissemination activities.
The approximate duration of the contract will be 36 months, depending on the completion of the tasks identified above, and this period is not necessarily linked to the duration of the specific project.

- Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of 29th of August, which approved the hiring of doctorate to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all areas of knowledge (RJEC), amended by the Law 57/2017 dated 19th of July, and regulated by Regulatory Decree nr 11-A/2017, dated 29th December
- Labour Code approved by Law no. 7/2009 of 12 February, under its current Reading.
The workplace shall be at Instituto de Telecomunicações, Polo de Aveiro, Campus Universitário de Santiago, 3810-193 Aveiro.

Specific Requirements
Candidates must have solid experience in cybersecurity, namely intrusion detection and prevention systems, IoT/edge security, and applied machine learning for distributed or resource-constrained environments. A strong proven background in intrusion detection systems (IDS), anomaly detection, and security monitoring for IoT, edge, or mobile platforms is required. Experience with experimental testbeds, simulation tools, data-driven security analytics, and implementation of lightweight security mechanisms, supported by strong software programming skills in MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, and C/C++ for Linux and Android OS, is highly valued.

Basic monthly salary: the basic monthly salary corresponds to level PR1 of Assistant Researcher (€ 3,576.56).

Eligibility criteria
Any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) holding a doctorate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Informatics, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science or other related scientific area and a suitable scientific and professional curriculum may submit an application. In case the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of 12th of October, and all formalities established therein must be fulfilled, by the selected candidate, until the date of signature of the contract.
Selection process
The evaluation of the scientific and curricular career has two components, namely:
The assessment of the curriculum vitae and other documentation presented, giving particular relevance to the contributions considered most relevant by the candidate in the last 5 years. This component of the evaluation is expressed in a scale of 0 to 20, and candidates with less than 14 are automatically considered excluded from the call. This component of the evaluation takes into consideration:
- Scientific production of the candidate, namely articles in peer-reviewed journals (referred in Journal Citation Report do ISI Web of Knowledge) and proceedings of international conferences. The jury will assess the scientific production taking into consideration the quality of the submitted items and their relevance to the field of the present call;
- Previous experience, knowledge of the themes, the scientific and technical expertise to carry out the functions described in point 1.
Candidates with a classification of 14 or higher in the previous component shall make a public live presentation of the results of their scientific activity in activities similar to the tasks mentioned in point 1 of this announcement, and future perspectives. Following, members of the evaluation panel shall stimulate an open debate with the candidate. The evaluation of the presentation is expressed in a scale of 0 to 20 and should take into account the scientific knowledge and the capacity of communication demonstrated by the candidate, as well as the answers to the questions placed by the members of the evaluation panel. Candidates with less than 14 in this component are automatically considered excluded from the call.
Each panel member score is obtained attributing a weighing factor of 90% to the classification given to the evaluation of the curriculum vitae and other documentation, with focus on the i) overall merit of the curriculum vitae, ii) knowledge in the field of this project, iii) the candidate's adequacy, suitability and motivation for the project and iv) fluency in English, and a weighing factor of 10% to the classification given to the Interview.
The final classification of each candidate is obtained by the sum of the scores of the panel members divided by the number of the members of the panel. In the event of a tie, the chairperson of the panel will have the casting vote.
According to article 13 of RJEC, the selection panel shall be: Dr. Joaquim Bastos (President), Dr. Jonathan Rodriguez and Dr. Georgios Mantas, and by Dr. Issa Elfergani as substitute member.
The list of admitted and excluded candidates and the final ranking list will be sent to all candidates by email.
