10.06.2025, scientific staff
For our research team we are looking for a chemist, chemical engineer or related disciplines (f/m/d) to develop an own analytical research focus starting August 15, 2025, in full-time (40.1 hours/week) for a limited period of 3 years.
We are seeking a chemist, chemical engineer, or related discipline (f/m/d) to join our team, starting August 15, 2025, on a full-time basis (40.1 hours/week), limited to a period of 3 years, to develop an independent research focus.
Position
For our research team, we are seeking a person with great potential to develop an independent scientific analytical research group on the topics of organic trace substances (drug residues, PFAS, pesticides), DNA, RNA, proteins, and biomolecules in water and wastewater. The primary goal is to establish an independent research group, combined with research and development activities, third-party funding acquisition, project management, and supervision of doctoral candidates and students. To support the research activities, a technical staff member will be made available to carry out the analytics, whose technical supervision will be provided. The position also includes a teaching load of 5 semester hours per week (lecture on environmental analysis, exercise in the hydrochemistry laboratory).
About us
We offer a position in an interdisciplinary and international team of engineers and natural scientists. In teaching, we are involved in the education of students (bachelor's and master's) in environmental and civil engineering. The focus of our research includes urban water supply, particularly with regard to climate change, advanced water treatment and water reuse, urban stormwater management, energy-neutral wastewater treatment, urban microbiology and the urban water-energy-food-ecosystem nexus. The development of the new research focus towards analytics is important to us, especially against the background of the changed legal framework (including EU Zero Pollution, EU KARL, EU WFD, Drinking Water Ordinance) and complements the other research focuses at the chair.
A laboratory with a range of equipment for the characterization and identification of organic molecules and proteins from aqueous samples is available for research work, including chromatographic separation techniques coupled with highly sensitive mass spectrometric detection methods (LC-MS/MS), headspace GC-FID, thermal desorption pyrolysis GC, and high-throughput sequencing technologies (RNA or DNA).
Requirements
The following qualifications are expected for the position:
• PhD
• Several years of research activity and experience in project management of research and development projects
• Visible development potential in research
• Experience with trace substance analysis, protein, DNA, and RNA analysis
• Experience with isotope-labeled substances
• High degree of flexibility and independence
• Networked thinking and acting as well as the ability to evaluate complex data
• Ability to work in a team
• Very good knowledge of German and English
Responsibilities
• Acquisition of special scientific skills through independent acquisition of third-party funding
• Distinguishing yourself in research and establishing an analytical research group
• Development and evaluation of analytical methods
• Guidance and advice to technical staff, students and doctoral candidates on analytical issues
• Teaching the environmental analysis course in the bachelor's program in environmental engineering
• Organization and implementation of the hydrochemistry laboratory exercise in the master's program in environmental engineering
• Supervision of students in bachelor's and master's theses
We offer
• Remuneration according to the public service collective agreement, TV-L-West E13
• Working hours: full-time (40.1 hours/week), initially limited to 36 months (extendable)
• A very good working atmosphere within the chair team
• Severely disabled people male and female applicants will be given preference if they otherwise have essentially the same qualifications
The Technical University of Munich strives to increase the proportion of women; applications from women are therefore expressly welcomed.
