Would you like to contribute to interdisciplinary research on the role of the Domestic Extraterritorial Atrocity Prosecutor (DEAP) with a victimological research project, on the intersection of (international) criminal law, criminology and political science? The NWO-VIDI project “Theorizing DEAP”, led by dr. Marieke de Hoon, is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated researcher with a completed PhD to play a leading role in our victimological research subproject, support and co-supervise other subprojects, and help build partnerships and projects. The postdoc position is 0,8 fte for 30 months, starting date to be discussed but no later than 1 September 2026.

The postdoc position is part of the NWO-VIDI project “Theorizing DEAP”, complementing the PI (Marieke de Hoon) and two PhD candidates. The project runs from 2025 to 2030. The main aim of the overall project is to analyse principles, rules and policies and develop a theoretical foundation for domestic atrocity prosecutions and transnational cooperations that includes a victim perspective apt for atrocity contexts, traversing legal and social sciences. The postdoc will be part of the Amsterdam Center for Criminal Justice (ACCJ) and embedded in the section Criminal Law of the department Public Law at the Amsterdam Law School.

What you will do

In your role as (post-doctoral) researcher, you will:

• Carry out and coordinate interdisciplinary research on how domestic prosecutors may incorporate a victim perspective in prosecuting cases of mass victimization that occurred abroad;
• Write and contribute to articles to be published in international peer-reviewed journals;
• Assist in the supervision of the project’s PhD candidates in their doctoral research;
• Develop a network of academic and non-academic partners for the purpose of developing grant proposals;
• Support and/or coordinate grant proposals in collaboration with the rest of the project team;
• Support and/or coordinate the organization of events for academia and societal partners;
• Present intermediate research results in internal discussions and external workshops and conferences.

What we ask of you

The position is open to researchers who have completed a PhD in one of the disciplines relevant to the project, with a particular preference for someone strong in qualitative empirical research methods and knowledge of the fields of victimology and/or criminology.

In addition, you have:

• a demonstrated interest and publications in a field relevant to the project;
• experience in organizing and coordinating research projects;
• experience in supervising/mentoring other researchers;
• a demonstrated affinity with interdisciplinary research;
• a demonstrated ability to communicate complex findings to an audience with varied disciplinary background;
• a willingness and ability to work independently and to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team;
• a willingness and ability to organize events;
• a willingness and ability develop grant proposals and a network among academics and societal partners;
• fluency in spoken English, and excellent writing skills in English.

What we offer you

The position is for 0.8 fte. Depending on the disciplinary expertise of the candidate, options can be explored (but not guaranteed) for an additional 0,2 teaching time at one of the UvA Faculties. The position is offered for 30 months and will start no later than 1 September 2026. Earlier starts, potentially also for fewer fte, may be possible.

The gross full-time monthly salary will be in accordance with the salary scales for (post-doc) Researchers at Dutch universities, scale 11 (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) ranging from €4.537 to €6.209 gross per month (full-time equivalent). Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.

Where you will work

You will be part of a project funded by an NWO-VIDI grant and running 5 years, as part of a team consisting of the principal investigator, one postdoctoral researcher (you), two PhD researchers, one student assistant, and up to two external PhD candidates.

The project team is based at the Amsterdam Center for Criminal Justice (ACCJ), the Center of Excellence for Criminal Law of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). ACCJ’s research activities aim at a critical understanding of legal, conceptual and practical challenges of criminal law, justice and policy in domestic, transnational and international settings. ACCJ includes a sub-group of international criminal law researchers that offer the world-leading International Criminal Law master program at Amsterdam Law School, and that collaborates closely with colleagues from Dutch Criminal Law, Military Law and Public International Law. In addition to the project’s embeddedness at the ACCJ, the project’s research intersects with the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL) for its international dimensions; the Amsterdam Centre on the Legal Professions and Access to Justice (ACLPA) for the study and theorization of criminal justice actors; the Center for Law and Behavior (C-LAB) for its study of criminal justice actors with empirical research methods; and the Asser Institute for its research on transnational developments related to atrocity justice. During the project duration, we will seek ways to collaborate with these research institutes.
