Postdoc scholarship in Communications Electronics

Linköping, Sweden

2026-05-18 (Europe/Stockholm)

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a prestigious ÅFORSK funded project. The selected candidate will conduct cutting edge research on the optimization of array antenna systems for imaging MIMO holographic staring radars. This work will contribute to the design and characterization of intelligent devices and environments for wireless communications, localization, and sensing, as part of the broader activities of the Physics and Electronics (FE) group in advanced multiple antenna systems. The successful candidate will join the research group of Professor Andrés Alayón Glazunov at the Department of Science and Technology, Linköping University.

The position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of next generation antenna and radar systems while strengthening an independent research profile in a highly active academic environment. The project focuses on innovative approaches to array antenna synthesis for imaging radars, drawing on concepts from holographic staring radar, MIMO radar, tiled subarray architectures, hybrid beamforming, and plane wave expansion. Its main objective is to address key challenges in complex propagation environments by reducing the need for beam scanning, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing the overall performance of imaging radar systems.

The research will focus on advanced MIMO and phased array antenna design for radar applications, with emphasis on array synthesis, electromagnetic optimization, and experimental validation. The project will tackle challenging design problems involving wide bandwidth, high efficiency, low mutual coupling, and compact system integration, while connecting antenna design choices to propagation effects, radar performance, and overall system functionality. The successful candidate will combine rigorous theoretical analysis with hands on laboratory experimentation and will be expected to publish in leading journals and present results at major international conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (IEEE TAP) and the European Conference on Antennas and Propagations (EuCAP).

Skills and qualifications

We are seeking a candidate with a PhD in electrical engineering, electromagnetics, wireless engineering, engineering physics, applied physics, or a closely related field. The applicant should have a strong publication record in well regarded journals and conferences, with research relevant to the design, optimization, and analysis of array antennas, such as phased arrays, active or passive arrays, and MIMO antennas. A strong theoretical and practical foundation in electromagnetic theory and antenna design is essential, together with expertise in beamforming techniques, including digital, analog, and hybrid approaches, as well as array signal processing.

The ideal candidate is at an early stage of developing an independent research career and brings a flexible, persistent, and proactive approach to research.

Experience or coursework in radar system design or related areas is considered an advantage.

Requirements:

Hands on experience in the design of phased or MIMO array antennas for applications in the millimeter wave bands is required. Proficiency in electromagnetic simulation tools such as CST Microwave Studio or HFSS is essential, as is experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for antenna analysis, performance evaluation, and algorithm development. Hands on experience in the experimental validation of antenna designs, including measurements in anechoic or reverberation chambers, is also essential.

We place particular emphasis on the ability to approach research problems from an interdisciplinary perspective, or on a clear willingness to develop the skills needed to do so. The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively within a diverse research team. Strong problem-solving skills, initiative, enthusiasm for engineering research, adaptability, and excellent written and spoken English are all required.

Meritorious:

Knowledge of radar systems, particularly MIMO radar and holographic radar, as well as signal processing and wireless propagation, is highly desirable.

Specific Requirements

To be eligible, the applicant must be a non-Swedish citizen and hold a PhD awarded by a university outside Sweden. The doctoral degree should normally have been awarded within the past three years. Exceptions may be made for candidates with special circumstances, such as parental leave, illness, or similar reasons.

Benefits

This development postdoctoral fellow position is initially for a 1-year timeframe with the possibility to extend for an additional year. The total time for receiving a scholarship from Linköping University can never exceed two years.

You will be given a tax-free scholarship of 29 000 SEK/month. Observe that the scholarship is paid as 2 lump sums.

Travel costs to/from Sweden for a scholarship holder will be covered up to a maximum amount. Additional funding can be available to participate in conferences.

Note, scholarships will not give any pension rights, sick or maternity pay and other work-related benefits. If you have any questions on the terms, please contact HR at the department of Science and Technology, hr@itn.liu.se

Application

  • Cover letter describing current and future research interests
  • Curriculum vitae which should include a brief summary (3 pages) of previous research experience
  • Names and contact information of at least two referees familiar with your previous research experience
  • Copy of your PhD diploma
  • Copy of your passport

Please send your application to registrator@itn.liu.se and Andrés Alayón Glazunov andres.alayon.glazunov@liu.se no later than May 18th 2026. Mark your application with ITN-2026-00160.
