Postdoc Surface Quality After Reheating in Green Steel Production

This research contributes to green steelmaking by investigating the effect of tramp elements on the surface quality of steels after reheating. Steel production accounts for approximately 7% of global CO₂ emissions. Achieving sustainable steel production requires green hydrogen usage, full recycling of scrap steel, and electrification of processes. Changes in heat treatment methods, particularly furnace atmospheres, will influence surface reactions. Increased use of recycled steel introduces tramp elements, affecting surface quality, mechanical properties, and manufacturability.

This project focuses on understanding oxidation processes in reheating furnaces, where as-cast steel is heat-treated for rolling mills. Transition to green furnace atmospheres increases water and CO2 content, impacting oxide layer growth and morphology. Tramp elements influence oxide growth kinetics, type, and morphology. Key features include porosity, layer thickness, iron loss, and oxide adhesion for descalability.

Oxidation changes steel surfaces from reflective metals to absorbing dielectrics, affecting emissivity and heat transfer. The project analyzes oxide phases, characterizes external oxidation layers, and incorporates insights into predictive emissivity models for temperature control. It also examines tramp elements' effects on oxidation and aims to develop a predictive model for oxide growth and emissivity under sustainable conditions.

We seek an ambitious post-doc or PhD researcher for this project under the Dutch National Growth Fund program – Growth with Green Steel (https://groeienmetgroenstaal.nl/en/). You will work in a stimulating environment, collaborate with industrial partners, and contribute to education.

Job requirements: Hold an MSc or PhD in materials science with background in metal/steel science. Strong experience in physical-chemical modeling and experimental competence. Experience in microstructural and surface characterization. Critical, curious approach with problem-solving skills. Proven writing and communication skills. Ability to work in cross-organisational teams and participate in educational activities.

TU Delft is a top international university addressing challenges in energy, climate, and more. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering focuses on fundamental understanding, design, and production.

Conditions: 3-year contract, 36-40 hours per week, salary per Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, excellent pension, flexible working, and more.
