Job Summary

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the University of Colorado Boulder to work with Prof. Julie Comerford on observational and/or theoretical studies of galaxy mergers and gravitational waves produced by supermassive black hole binaries. Who We Are

The Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy (CASA) is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the Universe in which we live through observations and theory. Founded in 1985, CASA is an affiliated unit within the structure of the Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences (APS) Department at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The successful applicant will contribute to a research program on (1) using simulated galaxy mergers to inform better observational identifications of galaxy mergers (using HST, JWST, Rubin, and/or Roman data), and/or (2) estimating the gravitational wave signatures of binary supermassive black holes that are detectable by pulsar timing arrays and/or LISA. New ideas and research proposals in the fields of galaxy mergers and gravitational waves produced by binary supermassive black holes are also encouraged.

You can expect to collaborate with a group of scientists that will celebrate strengths, value diverse perspectives, and work to ensure an equitable scholarly experience for all. The start date is flexible, ranging from May 2026 to September 2026. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years, with renewal for a third year contingent upon satisfactory progress and funding.

What We Can Offer

This position includes a starting range of ($65,000 - $70,000) annually, research/travel funds, and access to CU supercomputers. Relocation funds may be available per department guidelines.

Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or related field at the start of the position.
