Postdoctoral Associate (Gibbs Lab)

The Gibbs lab in the Department of Biology at New York University is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to study axonal mRNA transport and how this unique pathway influences mitochondrial quality control in neurons in the context of disease progression and injury. The primary research topics involve testing how homeostatic mechanisms allow functional neuronal mitochondria to exist far away from the cell body and how failure to maintain mitochondrial quality leads to neurodegenerative diseases and impairs neuronal recovery. To approach these questions we use a combination of genetics, biochemistry, cell biology and imaging in a number of models, including mice, cell lines and patient derived stem cells.

The Postdoctoral Associate would be expected to participate in multiple projects as well as to help supervise students who are early in their research careers. They would also be expected to help seek external funding for their work. The postdoc will receive close one-on-one mentoring, opportunities to present results at conferences, and guidance and support transitioning to their next career stage.

The term of employment is a year, with the possibility of renewal for subsequent years, include a competitive salary and other benefits (including the possibility of reasonably priced housing owned by NYU). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning April 1, 2026.

This position is based in New York and the selected candidate will be expected to work onsite as of their effective start date

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $62,500 - $70,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Applicants must hold (or complete this year) a Ph.D. in Biology, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology or a related field, and have a strong interest in neurodegenerative mechanisms and/or RNA biology. Specific knowledge areas that are helpful (but are not required) include genome editing/CRISPR, RNAseq, microscopy, iPSC- derived neuron models and rodent neurobehavior.
