Postdoctoral Fellow – Experimental Multiphase Flows

Analyze experimental measurements and develop physical interpretations and scaling arguments.

Develop new experimental methods and instrumentation as needed.

Compare experimental observations with theoretical models and/or numerical simulations.

Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.

Contribute to research proposals and reports.

Collaborate with faculty, students, and external research partners.

Mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in related projects.

Assist with maintaining laboratory equipment and establishing safe experimental procedures.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics, or a closely related field.
• Strong background in fluid mechanics and experimental research.
• Experience designing and conducting laboratory experiments.
• Experience with quantitative data analysis and scientific programming.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a research team.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred qualifications:

• Research experience in multiphase flows, turbulence, particle-laden flows, bubble or droplet dynamics, or related areas.
• Experience with PIV, PTV, high-speed imaging, optical diagnostics, or laser-based measurement techniques.
• Experience developing custom experimental facilities and instrumentation.
• Familiarity with MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools for experimental control and data analysis.
• Experience with large experimental datasets and advanced image-processing or computer-vision methods.

The position provides an opportunity to pursue fundamental questions in experimental multiphase fluid mechanics while developing advanced experimental and diagnostic capabilities. The postdoctoral fellow will be encouraged to develop independent research directions, participate in collaborations, publish high-impact research, and build experience toward a future academic, national laboratory, or industrial research career.

Salary Range
The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those candidates who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
