Postdoctoral Fellow in Gamma-Ray Astrophysics
Postdoctoral Fellow in Gamma-Ray Astrophysics
Clemson University: College of Science: Physics & Astronomy
Location: 108A Kinard Lab, Clemson, SC 29634
Open Date: Sep 05, 2025
Description
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow in gamma-ray astrophysics. The successful candidate will work under the mentorship of Dr. Karwin and play a leading role in advancing the science and data analysis capabilities of the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI), a NASA Small Explorer satellite mission scheduled for launch in 2027. This will entail working on the design, implementation, and maintenance of COSI's data analysis pipelines to ensure robust, cutting-edge science readiness. Additionally, the postdoctoral researcher will carry out astrophysical studies with data from multiple telescopes (e.g. COSI, Fermi-LAT and INTEGRAL/SPI), and also contribute to the development of next-generation gamma-ray mission concepts (e.g. AMEGO-X and GALE). Research will center on diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, with emphasis on cosmic-ray interactions. This position offers the opportunity to contribute at the forefront of high-energy astrophysics and to engage with a vibrant international collaboration.
The anticipated start date is August 2026, although the position can potentially start as early as March 2026. The appointment will be for one year with options for yearly renewal for up to three years based on performance and funding availability.
