Location: Primarily in Edmonton, Alberta, with collaborative work periods at the Université de Montréal (MILA). Hybrid arrangements and accommodations for personal life events are possible.

Project Overview:

The University of Alberta invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in Machine Learning and Causal Inference, focused on:

Strategic Classification

Causal Models

Long-term Fairness

Robust Learning Algorithms

This collaborative project is led by:

Prof. Nidhi Hegde (University of Alberta & Amii)

Prof. Dhanya Sridhar (Université de Montréal & Mila)

And funded by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).

The selected fellow will benefit from the vibrant, world-renowned environments at both Amii (Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute) and Mila (Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute), with strong support for professional development, academic advancement, and career transitions into industry.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Conduct cutting-edge research on strategic classification and causal learning

Publish in top-tier ML conferences and journals (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR)

Collaborate closely with Prof. Hegde, Prof. Sridhar, and research teams at Amii and Mila

Present work at conferences and workshops

Mentor and potentially co-supervise graduate or undergraduate students

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Computing Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, or a related area

Strong publication record in relevant venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, AISTATS, UAI, JMLR)

Strong communication skills in English (both written and spoken)

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated expertise in:

Optimization

Causal Learning

Theoretical ML frameworks

Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively on complex research problems

Experience working in interdisciplinary or collaborative research teams
