Who we are/Ko wai mātou
The Phage-host interactions (Phi) laboratory led by Professor Peter Fineran aims to understand the interactions between mobile genetic elements, such as bacteriophages and plasmids, and their bacterial hosts, and apply this fundamental knowledge to generate new biotechnologies. The Phi laboratory is at the forefront of research into bacteriophage biology, phage resistance and the application of phages, and is internationally recognised in these areas. The Phi lab team provides a supportive research environment and is a dynamic group that includes many experienced scientists.
The role/Te mahi
The main purpose of this position is to work on a project titled 'Bacterial defences that block jumbo phages'. The project is funded by the Marsden Fund Te Pūtea Rangahau a Marsden, Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi and involves an interdisciplinary collaboration with national and international collaborators. The position involves experimental design, laboratory research and data analysis. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is very important as the position will involve working both with other laboratory members and external collaborators.
Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako
- PhD in a relevant biological science and a publication record consistent with that of an active researcher.
- Experience in relevant experimental techniques is required. In particular microbial genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and microscopy.
- A thorough, organised, and systematic approach to laboratory practice and record keeping is essential.
- Ability to relate to a wide variety of people within a research environment.
- Self-motivated and able to work without direct supervision, set priorities and allocate own timetable.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- A commitment to practice in a manner consistent with the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi.

This is a full-time (1 FTE), fixed term position for three years available to start in June 2026, based in Dunedin. Some flexibility in start date may be possible.
The salary for this position is $92,350 per annum.
