Postdoctoral Fellow - Physiology
Job Summary
A training position designed to carry out advanced independent research to achieve the objectives of the research project, ensuring consistency with established methodological approaches and models, adherence to project timelines and completeness of documentation. Participate in research data collection and analysis; develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures; conduct studies of related literature; write and publish articles in scientific journals.
The successful candidate will join a NIH-funded project (PI: Dr. Weiqin Chen). Studies are approached with a translational perspective and aim to address the mechanisms that regulate nutrient and energy metabolism, and how they become reprogrammed in obesity, lipodystrophy, and cardiometabolic diseases.
The job involves designing and conducting research projects, presenting at national/international conferences, and writing manuscripts. The PI will closely work with the successful candidate for training in all of these aspects, and the candidate will be encouraged to apply for independent postdoctoral fellowship grants.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
DISSEMINATION OF RESULTS:
Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Presents findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally and internationally. Composing articles for publication in scientific journals; review articles prepared by others.
RESEARCH AND DATA ANALYSIS:
Participate in project planning and development of research protocols and carry out experiments while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines. Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Teach and participate in complex bacteriological, chemical and/or radio-chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis, macro- and micro-serological, histologic and cell culture procedures.
LAB MANAGEMENT:
Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants, and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work. Advise principal investigator, other postdocs, students, and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures, and other technological aspects of research activities.
EQUIPMENT:
Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and operate microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers, and other complex scientific equipment; instruct others in operation of equipment.
OTHER:
Performs other duties incidental to work described herein.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university with recent lab experience, basic lab and computer skills, and an ability to handle rodents.
Preferred Qualifications
Having any of the relevant background mention in the job summary is desired.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Proficiency in EndNote is a plus.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with good organizational and prioritization skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work independently with only general supervision. Ability to complete work and meet deadlines. Willing and able to work with research animals.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
