Postdoctoral Lecturer in East Asian Studies

Postdoctoral Lecturer in East Asian Studies

University of Göttingen Department of East Asian Studies

At the University of Göttingen, effective September 1, 2026, the Department of East Asian Studies invites applications for the position of

Postdoctoral Lecturer (f/m/d)

The position is full-time (39.8 hours per week) and fixed-term for three years, with the possibility of an extension for an additional three years. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on critical social and cultural debates and phenomena in the Chinese-speaking world over the past 20–30 years. Remuneration is according to pay scale group TV-L E13: in principle, the position is also suitable for part-time employment.

The position’s research profile should investigate critical debates on the massive transformations in the Chinese-speaking world, particularly since 1978. Special interest lies in expertise on related negotiation processes in the arts (e.g., literature, film), intellectual circles, social movements, journalism, or the new media. Applicants with additional transnational or global research experience are especially encouraged to apply. The position comes with a teaching load of four hours (equiv. of two courses) per semester, which is in accordance with § 31 NHG.

Applicants should hold an outstanding academic degree in a China-related academic field; they should demonstrate excellent proficiency in Modern Standard Chinese, and possess solid expertise in one or more additional academic disciplines, such as literature, art history, media studies, sociology, political science, anthropology, or contemporary history. Candidates should have very good English and German language skills. Moreover, they should be able to convincingly demonstrate how their research profile aligns with the existing focal areas in teaching and research at the Department of East Asian Studies.

The position is intended to support the professional development of early-career scholars and provides the opportunity to pursue a Habilitation or a second monograph.

The University of Göttingen is committed to increasing the proportion of women in areas where they are underrepresented and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply. It defines itself as a family-friendly university and actively promotes the compatibility of academic careers and family life. The University also aims to increase the employment of persons with severe disabilities; applications from severely disabled candidates will be given preference in cases of equal qualification.

The application deadline is April 15, 2026. Applications (including the usual documents: CV, motivation letter and, not mandatory, letters of recommendation) should preferably be submitted electronically to:
