Postdoctoral position in condensed matter theory

UFV-PA 2025/1332

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström Laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. More information can be found on our website www.physics.uu.se.

Research area

The postdoctoral researcher will perform theoretical investigations and computationally based modelling within condensed matter physics. Currently, within the group there is a strong focus on ultrafast out-of-equilibrium dynamics, laser-induced ultrafast spin dynamics, generation of non-equilibrium orbital and spin currents, and simulations of superconductivity in real materials.

Duties

The research tasks include the development of theoretical models and of computer simulation programs. The areas where the postdoctoral researcher can contribute are: theory and modeling of light-induced spin and orbital currents, theory of laser-induced ultrafast spin dynamics and spin transport, theory for coupled out-of-equilibrium dynamics of electrons, magnons and phonons, and modeling of electrically induced magnetization dynamics in spintronic elements.

Various computer programs, like first-principles methods (DFT and TDDFT), simulations of out-of-equilibrium dynamics and superconductivity will be used. In the project that is headed by Prof. Peter Oppeneer, the candidate is offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area in solid-state physics and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading experimental and theoretical groups.

Requirements

The applicant is expected to have a PhD degree in theoretical or computational physics. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than four years prior to the application deadline. Exceptions can apply for special reasons (such as illness, children, labor union tasks, etc.). The applicant is further expected to have excellent capabilities to perform high-level research, as demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals. Good communication skills both orally and in written English, and also the ability to work independently, are required.

Additional qualifications

The applicant is further expected to be strongly motivated and a strong background in theoretical and condensed matter physics is desirable. Experience with large-scale computer simulations is also desirable, as well as the ability to perform computer code development.

Application

The application should consist of a cover letter, CV, publication list, certificates of relevant degrees, an outline of the PhD thesis and a short research statement describing the applicant’s research experiences and interests. The applicant should also include the names of at least two reference persons.

About the employment

The employment is a temporary position of 3 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date 2025-10-01 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
