Position Overview
The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee to support cutting-edge research on simulation-driven composite materials discovery. The successful candidate will conduct large-scale simulation campaigns to generate data for a materials property database and will contribute to the development of AI models for composite design.
Working within a multidisciplinary team of engineers, materials scientists, and AI experts, the appointee will:
- Build and execute finite element simulations for composites with arbitrary microstructures.
- Predict homogenized material properties using advanced computational tools.
- Develop AI/ML workflows that propose composite structures given target mechanical or physical properties.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journal articles.
- Present research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
This is a full-time, on-site position based at Argonne’s campus in Lemont, Illinois (5 days per week).
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0–5 years) in: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience with the finite element method.
- Proficiency in C++ and Python.
- Experience using Unix-based operating systems.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present to diverse audiences.
- Commitment to Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, Teamwork.
- Ability to work on-site at Argonne five days per week.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with MOOSE (Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment).
- Experience with PyTorch.
- Familiarity with HPC job scheduling systems.

Salary Information
The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758 – $117,925.
Final salary offers are based on factors including candidate qualifications, scope of role, internal equity, and external market comparisons.
