About the Position

The newly established Finnish Centre of Excellence in Immune–Endothelial Interfaces (IMMENs) invites applications for two Postdoctoral Researcher positions. Successful candidates will work in the research groups of Dr. Taija Mäkinen and Dr. Kari Vaahtomeri at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki.

IMMENs, in collaboration with Åbo Akademi University in Turku, investigates how lymphatic vessel endothelium regulates immune responses. The research focuses on local immune regulation, lymphatic–immune crosstalk, and phenotypic changes controlling immune cell trafficking, fate, and function.

Approaches include:

• In vivo genetic mouse models
• Advanced live and intravital imaging
• Engineered microchip models
• Primary cell co-culture systems
• Novel microscopy and analysis methods

The project aims to uncover mechanisms of lymphatic endothelial immunomodulation in homeostasis, inflammation, and tumorigenesis, providing a foundation for translational studies for immune-targeted therapies.

Who We Are Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• PhD in biological or medical sciences (obtained within the last 3 years; extensions allowed for parental/sick leave)
• Strong background in cell biology, vascular biology, immunology, biochemistry, mouse models, or image analysis
• Demonstrated ability for abstract thinking and independent research development
• Excellent English communication skills
• Ability to work in an international, collaborative environment

Desirable Skills:

• Experience with vascular biology, immunology, high-end imaging techniques, or mouse model experimentation

Responsibilities

• Conduct postdoctoral research on immune–endothelial interfaces
• Design and perform experiments in collaboration with the IMMENs research groups
• Contribute to publications, presentations, and scientific dissemination
• Collaborate with international and multidisciplinary teams
