Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Superconducting Quantum Circuits

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Superconducting Quantum Circuits

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Superconducting Quantum Circuits. This is a fixed-term position until 30 June 2027. We would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible but must be available to start by 1 April 2026 at the latest.

This project aims to develop superconducting microwave interconnects and metasurfaces for distributed quantum networks, focusing on high-fidelity none-nearest neighbour entangling gates while addressing hardware overhead and thermal load in superconducting quantum circuits.

The successful candidate will develop new characterization and benchmarking techniques for quantum algorithms on devices at or beyond the 16-transmon scale. They will also contribute to designing large-scale control and readout multiplexing based on cQED space-time modulation metasurfaces. Responsibilities include collecting and analyzing experimental data, publishing results, and presenting findings at conferences.

This role may involve superconducting microwave circuit design and simulation, theoretical analysis of classical and quantum circuits, numerical method development, cleanroom device fabrication, cryogenic system operation, and microwave control electronics and software. The post-holder will also have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should hold a PhD, or be close to completion in physics or electrical engineering or a related field and have a strong background in experimental quantum information, clean room device fabrication and microwave techniques or quantum device physics.

Previous experience in the field of superconducting quantum circuits, circuit theory and synthesis, and microwave techniques will be an advantage.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent teamwork and communication skills.

You will be required to upload a CV, covering letter and details of two referees as part of your online application. Please direct enquiries about the role to Mustafa Bakr (mustafa.bakr@physics.ox.ac.uk).

You will be required to upload a statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application. Only applications received before midday (UK time) on 9 January 2025 can be considered. Interview will take place on 16 January 2026.
