Position Highlights

The lab of Janko Nikolich is seeking multiple highly motivated candidates for full-time positions as Postdoctoral Research Associates. Candidates will study aging and late-life homeostasis of the immune system, with special attention to secondary lymphoid organ aging and the involvement of cellular stress, stromal cell dysregulation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Other projects may involve studying the impact of coinfection and lifelong persistent infection on immune and overall health in mouse and human models. Strong cellular immunology training is essential for this position; background in stromal cocultures with T cells is advantageous. The successful postdoctoral applicants are expected to work independently and be productive and collaborative with other team members. The postdoctoral candidates will benefit from interaction within the diverse, interdisciplinary environment at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan, design and conduct advanced, multi-disciplinary research involving the use of mouse models, human tissue and blood samples to understand immune aging.
  • Use biochemical, cellular, molecular, and pharmacological approaches to for mechanistic studies.
  • Use cutting-edge technologies for transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic studies.
  • Complete the assigned work in time.
  • Complete complex research projects at different stages (advanced through nearly completed).
  • Formulate, troubleshoot and optimize research methods and techniques as needed.
  • Independently reproduce, evaluate, research, and improve techniques currently used.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments.
  • Analyze data and present results in the weekly laboratory meetings.
  • Attend seminars and scientific conferences when available.
  • Prepare and revise manuscripts for publication.
  • Participate in grant writing, including generating preliminary data, submitting grant applications, and preparing progress reports.
  • Perform literature regularly and bring new ideas to the projects.
  • Work collaboratively with team members in the lab, and with scientific investigators within and outside of the University of Arizona.
  • Be willing to help each other.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance of research activities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Familiarity with advanced flow cytometric staining and analysis, including spectral flow cytometry.
  • Knowledge of scRNA-sequencing, proteomics, bioinformatics, confocal microscopy, in vivo physiological animal studies.
  • Knowledge of general metabolism, obesity, diabetes.
  • Skills in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry and pharmacology.
  • Skills with animal studies are required for certain projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in biology or relevant areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record of creativity and established track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
