About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mathematics and Statistics to work on a project entitled "Data-driven modelling of dynamical systems: A measure transport framework". The successful candidate will work with Associate Professor Tiangang Cui and Professor Georg Gottwald as well as Professor Sebastian Reich on a project at the interface of dynamical systems, measure transport and machine learning on developing a novel mathematical framework for identifying reduced dynamical models of high-dimensional complex multi-scale systems. The project will develop fast, scalable numerical algorithms for extracting the evolution model of the relevant dynamical skeleton, quantifying associated uncertainties. We will develop mathematical theory underpinning the novel methodology, as well as applying it to the development of a data-driven model for climate prediction of the El-Niño-Southern Oscillation. This project has recently been funded by the Australian Research Council

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • undertake research at the interface between dynamical systems, measure transport and machine learning
  • publish research papers
  • demonstrate research excellence

The School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Sydney is one of the largest in Australia. It has 64 continuing academic staff to supervise research and teaching, 51 fixed term staff and postdocs, 97 postgraduate students and 2,288 equivalent full-time student-load undergraduate students.
