Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Job Description

About This Opportunity

We are seeking an innovative and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow, with expertise in stem cell biology and genome engineering for precise gene correction and disease modelling organoid systems, to join our world-class research team at the Frazer Institute to support and drive dermatology research.

This position builds on our recent foundational work in human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs)-derived skin organoids (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38044307/), and the generation of vascularized skin organoids (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40817680/). This program advances next-generation patient-specific organoid systems for skin disease modelling and therapeutic discovery.

We are specifically seeking early career researchers who have a passion for research, and a proven interest in mechanistic disease modelling, advanced human tissue models, and translational platform development for genetic skin disorders. Work with us to create real change in precision dermatology and regenerative medicine, and we will help you get the best start to your academic career at one of Australia’s leading universities.

Working under the guidance and direction of Dr Abbas Shafiee and Professor Kiarash Khosrotehrani, successful candidates will conduct vital research in regenerative dermatology and genetic skin diseases, leveraging hiPSC technology and advanced skin organoid systems, to uncover skin disease mechanisms and enable precision therapeutic strategies.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Research: Energetically drive research projects, assist in relevant studies and tasks assigned by supervisors, support applications for competitive research funding, publish in reputable journals and utilise best practice research methodologies.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate and strengthen national and international research collaborations, facilitating cross-institutional integration and contributing to the strategic growth of the program.
  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Assist with supervision of students and provide performance feedback and training to research support staff and supervisees.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.

About You

Our ideal candidate will possess:

  • A PhD in stem cell biology, molecular genetics, bioengineering, or a related discipline with demonstrated research experience in human disease modelling or organoid systems.
  • An emerging research profile in hiPSC technology, genome editing, and/or advanced 3D tissue models, with a track record of publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
  • A solid foundational understanding of molecular biology, and developmental biology (skin biology and dermatology experience highly desirable).
  • Advanced expertise in genome engineering, gene correction strategies, and characterisation of engineered cell lines and organoids.
  • Experience in organoid culture, 3D tissue systems, and translational human model development will be considered an advantage.
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills, with the ability to prepare high-quality manuscripts, reports, and research documentation.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and contribute to national and international collaborative research initiatives, with a high level of interpersonal and communication skills.

We encourage all applications, both domestic and international. Subject to individual eligibility, we may support the successful applicant with obtaining employer-sponsored work rights.

Appointment to this role is subject to the successful completion of relevant pre-employment checks including verification of qualifications and mandatory immunisations. This may also include checks relating to gender-based violence matters or other integrity and conduct requirements.
