Essential Job Duties:
This position supports a collaborative research project between North Carolina State University and the USDA-APHIS Mexfly rearing facility in Texas. The work focuses on developing novel Mexfly strains that express gene-edited phenotypic marker traits. The research includes utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 technology to disrupt eye color genes and assessing associated behavioral outcomes in modified populations.
The position will be based at the USDA-APHIS Mexfly laboratory in Texas, where all rearing and experimental activities must take place. Primary responsibilities include planning and conducting gene-editing and behavioral experiments, coordinating research activities between both institutions, maintaining project documentation, and preparing data for review and publication.
NC State will provide scientific training, support with experimental design, data analysis guidance, and procurement of project supplies. The appointed researcher will be expected to maintain regular communication with both laboratories and carry out project activities in alignment with established research objectives, compliance requirements, and laboratory standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design, plan, and execute research experiments focused on CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing of Mexfly strains, including knockout of eye color genes and subsequent behavioral assessment.
- Conduct all laboratory and experimental work on-site at the USDA-APHIS Mexfly rearing facility in Texas, ensuring compliance with biosafety, research, and facility protocols.
- Maintain detailed research records, data sets, and methodological documentation consistent with project, institutional, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate closely with NC State and USDA-APHIS project personnel, including participating in regular research coordination meetings, progress updates, and collaborative planning.
- Analyze experimental data, interpret findings, and contribute to manuscript preparation, presentations, and research reporting.
