We offer three postdoctoral positions in the field of environmental sensing and instrumentation for gravitational-wave detectors and experimental particle astrophysics at the Particle Astrophysics Technology Centre (Astrocent), implemented at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center as part of the International Research Agendas programme of the Foundation for Polish Science, supported by the European Funds for Smart Economy.
Astrocent conducts interdisciplinary research in particle astrophysics, developing advanced technologies for exploring the hidden Universe.

The successful candidates will join a research team developing next-generation instrumentation for precision environmental monitoring in support of future gravitational-wave observatories, including the Einstein Telescope and Virgo. The research involves the development of novel sensing technologies, environmental noise characterization, instrumentation, and advanced data analysis methods. Depending on the candidate's expertise and interests, the work may include hardware development, embedded systems, electronics, software, signal processing, data analysis, laboratory measurements, field deployments, and participation in international scientific collaborations.
Astrocent (https://astrocent.edu.pl) was established on 1 July 2018 within the framework of the International Research Agendas Programme of the Foundation for Polish Science. Its significant expansion has been recently made possible with a combined 30 MEur of funding from the Horizon Europe Teaming of Excellence programme, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Foundation for Polish Science.
At Astrocent, research is focused primarily on the areas of the detection of neutrinos, gravitational waves and dark matter using advanced technological instruments, whose development will be among the prime areas of activity of the Centre, as well as on theory.
Astrocent has developed close collaborative links with institutions in Europe and worldwide, in particular with our strategic partners APC (Astroparticle and Cosmology Laboratory) in Paris and the McDonald Institute in Canada.
Currently, IRAP Astrocent project comprises three international research groups of physicists and engineers:
- Photonics for astroparticle physics and sustainable energy (leader: Prof. Marcin Kuźniak);
- Medical physics and radiation detectors (leader: Prof. Masayuki Wada);
- Electronics, seismic and environmental sensors (leader: Dr. Mariusz Suchenek).
Astrocent is formally an administrative division of Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences (http://www.camk.edu.pl) – an internationally leading institute in astronomy and astrophysics. Skills/Qualifications
Key responsibilities include:
- conduct research on environmental sensing technologies and precision instrumentation;
- develop and characterize sensors and measurement systems;
- participate in the design, implementation, and testing of electronic, embedded, and software systems;
- analyze experimental data and develop methods for environmental noise characterization;
- participate in laboratory experiments and field measurement campaigns;
- collaborate with international research teams within the Virgo and Einstein Telescope collaborations;
- publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and present them at international conferences.
Profile of candidates/requirements:
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- A Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Computer Engineering, Geophysics, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
Experience in at least one of the following areas:
- experience in experimental gravitational wave astrophysics.
- scientific instrumentation,
- electronics, embedded systems, software development,
- experimental physics,
- signal processing, environmental sensing, data acquisition systems,
- scientific data analysis.
- Programming experience in one or more languages (e.g. Python, C/C++, MATLAB, Julia, or similar).
- Ability to work both independently and as part of an international interdisciplinary team.
- Good written and spoken English.
Desired qualifications:
The following experience would be considered an advantage:
- development of scientific instrumentation;
- analog or digital electronics;
- embedded systems or FPGA programming;
- PCB design;
- signal processing or control systems;
- laboratory measurements and experimental techniques;
- data analysis and numerical modelling;
- participation in international research collaborations.
Candidates are not expected to possess all of the above skills. We welcome applicants from diverse scientific and engineering backgrounds who are motivated to learn and contribute to interdisciplinary research.

- Remuneration - 11 776 PLN gross/month (estimated value "on hand" = 8 800 PLN net/month)
- Full-time employment contract (the initial term is for two years with an option of renewal if mutually agreed)
