"Postdoctoral researcher Communication Science at AI, Media & Democracy Lab"

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a profile in communication science to join the AI, Media & Democracy Lab. The lab aims to set up an experimental space for applying AI in the media, investigating how AI-driven applications change journalism, the public sphere, civic engagement, and economic competition. It focuses on developing and testing new AI applications to address issues like disinformation, algorithmic bias, and filter bubbles, while creating ethical and legal frameworks aligned with fundamental rights and European regulations.

Your role involves investigating how AI changes the relationship between media, users, and AI, and its effects on democratic engagement. You will design AI-driven applications to build trust, combat disinformation, and create new user experiences such as through linked data or virtual assistants.

• Develop, conduct, and publish research on media and AI, and present at (inter)national conferences.
• Contribute to the public debate and organize activities as part of AIMD and related groups at the University of Amsterdam.
• Contribute to events, research meetings, and grant applications.
• Collaborate in team science with other researchers.

Requirements: A PhD in communication science, journalism, or related field; strong affinity with digital/computational methods; experience in interdisciplinary teams; excellent English skills; ability to work autonomously in a multidisciplinary setting; interest in organizing events.

We offer a temporary 0.8 FTE contract for at least 2 years, with possible 0.2 FTE teaching role. Starting date: February 1, 2026. Salary: €4,728 to €6,633 gross per month based on full-time employment (38 hours/week), plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The position is at the University of Amsterdam.

The lab is a collaboration between various UvA and HvA entities, focusing on AI and digital technology's impact on media and democracy.
