Position description

UTE University, through the Department of Postdoctoral Studies, invites applications from professionals holding a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) with an academic and scientific track record in Architecture and Urban Planning to join the 2026–2027 Postdoctoral Program.

The position is intended for the development of original, independent research over a 24-month period, based on a research proposal aligned with UTE University's research priorities. The program encompasses scientific output, participation in academic activities and in the training of early-career researchers, as well as the identification of and application to funding and cooperation opportunities related to the research.

Research area: Architecture, Urban Planning, Construction, and Visual Arts. This research area adopts an interdisciplinary approach that combines theory and practice to address challenges in the design of habitable spaces, urban planning, and artistic expression. Architecture and urban planning are grounded in theories of territorial development, sustainability, and habitability, while construction incorporates technological innovation and efficiency in the use of materials. Visual arts, in turn, contribute an aesthetic, symbolic, and critical dimension that enriches cultural and social processes. Overall, this research area promotes the creation of sustainable, inclusive, and culturally meaningful environments.

Requirements

• Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a field relevant to the program.

• Academic and scientific track record in the area of specialization.

• Scientific output and research experience relevant to the field applied for.

• A research proposal submitted in the prescribed format and aligned with Universidad UTE's research priorities.

• Knowledge of funding sources and the ability to identify cooperation opportunities.

• Interest in contributing to the strengthening of research and to the training of early-career researchers.

• Availability to carry out the program on an exclusive, on-site basis.

• The documentation required for the application.

Where the doctoral degree certificate has not yet been issued, applicants may submit official certification or a letter confirming that the doctoral defense has been approved.

Desirable qualifications

• Scientific publications and a research track record in the area of specialization.

• Experience in research projects.

• Experience in identifying and applying to funding sources.

• Experience in academic and scientific cooperation.

• Experience in training or mentoring graduate students.

• Participation in academic, scientific, and outreach activities.

• Ability to conduct original and independent research.

Responsibilities

Over the course of the appointment, the selected candidate will be expected to:

• Carry out the approved research plan and produce scientific results.

• Publish at least 4 scientific articles in journals indexed in Scopus or Web of Science and ranked in quartiles Q1 or Q2.

• Submit at least 1 additional scientific article to a journal indexed in Scopus or Web of Science before the end of the appointment, providing proof of submission or official receipt.

• Identify and apply to national or international funding and cooperation opportunities in support of the research and, where funds are secured, allocate them to the activities for which they were awarded, in accordance with the terms set by the funding or partner organization.

• Co-supervise at least one master's thesis together with a UTE University faculty member, reviewing progress and providing feedback.

• Remain in Ecuador for at least 65% of the appointment. The remaining 35% may be spent abroad on academic, scientific, or cooperation activities related to the program, subject to prior institutional authorization.

Terms of appointment

The appointment will run for 24 months and may be renewed for up to 12 additional months, subject to a satisfactory performance review and the availability of institutional or external funding.

The position requires exclusive dedication and on-site attendance. Ecuadorian postdoctoral researchers must be present on site from the start of their activities. Selected international researchers will have up to 30 days to begin program activities; during this period they may carry them out remotely, where applicable, while arranging their relocation to Ecuador.

Physical incorporation at UTE University must take place within 60 days of notification of selection, allowing for the relevant immigration and relocation procedures.

The monthly salary will range from USD 1,800 to USD 2,500. The applicable level will be determined by the Selection Committee based on the researcher's experience, academic and scientific track record, and the nature of the proposed research.

Selection process

The selection process comprises:

1. Eligibility review: verification of requirements and documentation.

2. Academic evaluation: up to 50 points, distributed across track record and scientific output (20 points), research proposal (20 points), and interview (10 points).

3. Interview: 45 to 60 minutes, in person or online, in Spanish or English.

4. Recommendation by the Selection Committee.

5. Approval and notification of results.

6. Acceptance of the terms of appointment through submission of the corresponding letter.
