Postdoctoral researcher in the field of Food Studies
Job Summary: The TASTE Project, funded by the European Research Council, explores culinary change in Indonesian diasporas by investigating how cuisines have adapted historically and continue to evolve. It focuses on cultural, historical, social, economic, and environmental forces shaping these processes.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent research and publish findings, aiming for at least one peer-reviewed journal article per year and one public-facing output annually.
- Identify and synthesize synergies across PhD projects in Suriname, South Africa, and Sri Lanka, including maintaining contact with PhD researchers during fieldwork.
- Lead in co-editing a volume on culinary change in Indonesian diasporas.
- Participate in academic conferences, workshops, and outreach activities.
- Support project administration and financial oversight.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Hold a recent PhD in fields such as anthropology, history, economic history, ethnobotany, human geography, cultural studies, sociology, or political science, with a focus on socio-cultural aspects of food.
- Demonstrate strong interest in how taste changes in Indonesian diasporas.
- Capable of mentoring PhD candidates.
- Proven academic track record reflected in publications.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills, with proficiency in a language from the destination countries preferred.
- Experience with sensory and embodied dimensions of food and connections to local networks in destination countries is desirable.
What the Employer Offers: A 3.6-year fixed-term contract with a salary range of €3,897 to €4,707 gross per month for a full-time appointment, plus 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance, pension accrual, and up to 41 days of annual leave with full-time employment.
