Offer Description
The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for the design, synthesis, and characterization of intermetallic alloy flakes resonating below 1 GHz.
Initially, the researcher will focus on the Ni₁₋ₓFeₓ solid solution to characterize the resonance frequency as a function of the Fe/Ni ratio. These samples will be fabricated by sputtering onto various substrates and characterized using a coaxial cell to extract the complex permeability spectra. The postdoc will then produce bulk samples (spherical powder and flaky-shaped forms to tune the resonance frequency) based on the selected formulation and develop composite materials. In addition, the researcher will carry out magnetic measurements (Hc, Ms), and will be responsible for cross-analysis of the results, drafting technical reports, and presenting progress during project meetings with MOOSAIC partners.
- Synthesis of intermetallic alloys using various methods (sputtering, planetary milling, etc.)
- Formulation of flexible-band composite materials
- Coaxial cell measurements and extraction of complex magnetic permeability (μ)
- Magnetic characterization of powders and composites (Hc, Ms)
- Cross-analysis of data and correlation with synthesis conditions
- Writing technical reports and progress presentations

The MOOSAIC project aims to develop an innovative magnetic mapper allowing to analyze the magnetic properties of materials at the microstructural scale. This tool will produce vectorial maps of stray magnetic fields emitted from sample surfaces, measuring their absolute magnitude as well as their frequency response (magnetic susceptibility).
The Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Materials of Strasbourg (IPCMS) is a joint research unit (UMR 7504) affiliated with the CNRS and the University of Strasbourg. This multidisciplinary institute is structured into five departments, bringing together physicists and chemists working on advanced materials for optics, magnetism, magneto-transport, and biomedical applications.
IPCMS has recognized expertise in the development of innovative absorbing materials and has participated in several research projects in this field. As part of the MOOSAIC project—conducted in collaboration with the Condensed Matter Physics Department at CEA/SPEC, the Electrical Energy Research Institute of Nantes Atlantique (IREENA), and Geosciences Environment Toulouse (GET), and funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR)—the institute is involved in the development of magnetic materials and their structural, magnetic, and high-frequency characterizations.
We are currently seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the Department of Inorganic Materials Chemistry, with the goal of identifying a formulation of an intermetallic alloy that resonates at sub-GHz frequencies.

Eligibility criteria
- Composite formulation (intermetallic/polymer mixing, molding, casting): Ability to prepare homogeneous dispersions of intermetallic alloys in polymer matrices, and to fabricate films suitable for electromagnetic measurements.
- Electromagnetic measurements (S-parameter acquisition and analysis): Proficiency with vector network analyzers (VNAs), coaxial setups, and techniques for extracting complex permeability.
- Magnetic characterization (Hc, Ms via VSM or similar techniques): Ability to perform hysteresis loop measurements, extract key magnetic parameters (coercivity, saturation magnetization), and interpret the results.
- Data processing: Strong command of tools such as Python for numerical data analysis.
- Laboratory skills and safety: Proficiency in laboratory equipment handling and adherence to safety protocols.
