Position Summary

The Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute to experimental nuclear science research in one of the areas listed below:

  1. Lifetime measurements and spectroscopy with fast and reaccelerated rare-isotope beams – The goal of the research is to investigate nuclear shell and shape evolution far from stability and study exotic decays and electromagnetic responses of weakly-bound systems. Experiments will be performed utilizing the gamma-ray tracking array in combination of the plunger device, ancillary detectors and spectrograph (Prof. Hiro Iwasaki).

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Perform research and development activities to support the FRIB experimental program
  • Prepare and submit research results for publication
  • Attend conferences and seminars and present the results of the research program
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to conduct independent and original nuclear science research
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Thorough knowledge of nuclear science
  • Proficiency in experimentation, data analysis, and simulation
  • Ability to collaborate within the group and externally
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, with all audiences

Required Degree

Doctorate - nuclear physics, nuclear or radiochemistry, nuclear astrophysics or a related field

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD. in nuclear physics, nuclear or radiochemistry, nuclear astrophysics, or a related field
  • An ability to carry out independent and original research as demonstrated by published works in refereed journals and/or conference proceedings
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by published works and by presentations at conferences, workshops, scientific outreach, and other professional meetings
  • Strong research interest, expressed clearly in the cover letter, in one or more of the specific research areas listed for the research group
  • Ability to work with export-controlled technologies

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience programming in C++
  • Experience in using ROOT and Geant4
  • Experience in nuclear electronics and data acquisition
  • Experience in detector design and assembly
