Postdoctoral scholarship holder in preclinical radioligand development for theranostic applications
Position
You will conduct research activities within the Radiopharmacy (CREANT) department and the Molecular Imaging Center Antwerp (MICA), focusing on the preclinical evaluation of theranostic radioligands targeting tumor-associated proteases.
Project overview: The Radiopharmacy group has extensive expertise in the development of radiolabeled ligands for proteases implicated in human diseases, with applications in molecular imaging techniques such as PET and SPECT, as well as in targeted radionuclide therapy. Our team at the University of Antwerp has recently developed novel FAP-targeted radioligands (FAPIs) with improved tumor retention and pharmacokinetics compared to existing compounds. This project aims to advance these ligands by conjugating them with alpha-emitting radionuclides, enabling precise and potent destruction of tumor tissue while sparing healthy organs. The ultimate goal is to generate robust preclinical data supporting the translation of this therapeutic approach into a Phase I clinical trial.
Role and responsibilities: We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team. The successful candidate will contribute to the in vitro and in vivo preclinical evaluation of FAPI-based radioligands, focusing on their imaging and therapeutic potential. Key tasks include:
- Designing, planning, and executing preclinical experiments in cell and animal models of cancer.
- Conducting biodistribution, dosimetry, and therapeutic efficacy studies of radiolabeled-FAPI conjugates.
- Performing molecular and histological analyses of treatment effects on the tumor microenvironment.
- Collaborating closely with radiochemistry, imaging, and oncology teams within the consortium.
- Contributing to scientific publications, reports, and presentations at international conferences.
Profile
You hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in oncology, cancer biology, pharmacology, radiobiology, radiopharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related field from a non-Belgian institution.
Strong expertise in preclinical animal models (rodents), tumor biology, and therapeutic testing.
Hands-on experience with cell culture and in vitro assays.
Experience in small animal imaging with previous work with radiopharmaceuticals is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Excellent scientific writing and communication skills in English.
Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
What we offer
An exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge translational cancer research with direct clinical impact.
A collaborative and supportive working environment within a multidisciplinary research consortium.
Access to state-of-the-art preclinical imaging and radiochemistry facilities.
Opportunities for career development, mentoring, and international networking.
We offer a full-time appointment as a postdoctoral scholarship holder for a period of one year. This period can be extended up to three years after positive evaluation.
The planned start date is January 2, 2026 (or as soon as possible after that date).
Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for postdoctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff.
You will receive ecocheques, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
You will do your work in the Laboratories of Radiopharmacy and MICA at campus Drie Eiken of the University of Antwerp in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
