Position

The Department of Veterinary Sciences seeks a doctoral scholarship holder at the interface of neurology and hematology.

Key responsibilities include:

• Preparation of a PhD thesis in translational ischemic stroke research, focusing on the role of immunothrombosis in brain injury and disease progression.
• Work with innovative humanized mouse models and patient samples to understand thrombosis-immune interactions after stroke.
• Integration into a multidisciplinary research environment within the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Histology (CBH).
• Collaboration with the Antwerp Centre for Advanced Microscopy (ACAM), providing access to advanced imaging and microscopy infrastructure.
• Publication of high-quality scientific articles and presentation of research at national and international conferences.
• Limited teaching and research support tasks for the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Histology.

Profile

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

• Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Bio-engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Veterinary Sciences, or an equivalent degree (or completion by the start date).
• Excellent academic results.
• Teaching competences aligned with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
• Research qualities aligned with faculty and university policies.
• Commitment to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.
• Open and honest communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; systematic approach to complex issues; excellent planning to meet deadlines.
• FELASA B/C certification for animal research.
• Willingness to work with animal models.
• Flexibility regarding working hours for certain experimental phases.
• Willingness to apply for an external PhD fellowship (e.g., FWO).
