The Subject of Energy Engineering at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) invites highly motivated candidates interested in conducting research on: electrified high-temperature process heat supply for steel-making processes.
Do you want to contribute to the transformation to a CO2-neutral steel industry? Luleå University of Technology offers six postdoctoral scholarships that spans across the steel value chain from fossil-free steelmaking to properties and performance of high-performance steel. All six research projects will be in collaboration with University of Oulu, Finland, as a part of the strong steel research environment in Sweden and Finland.
Subject description
Energy Engineering concerns the development of technologies and processes in order to build a sustainable energy supply. The research focuses on bioenergy technologies and energy-efficiency in industry and society.
Project description
Steelmaking processes still rely heavily on combustion of fossil fuels to supply high temperature process heat (>500 °C). The ongoing rapid expansion of cheap renewable electricity gives an opportunity to electrify this process heat and further reduce the emission from the sector. Traditionally, resistive heating has been the main strategy for direct electrification. Recently, emerging technologies such as microwave, induction, and plasma have attracted attention due to their ability to directly heat the product or fluid carrier, while achieving extremely high temperatures. This provides unprecedented process precision and flexibility with rapid, localized heating that improves efficiency, product quality, and system-level integration.
The main aims of the project are to develop, design, and validate an electrified process heat supply and high-temperature heat storage systems. The activities will focus on the induction-heated process capable of supplying heat above 1400 °C. The project is mainly conducted through experimental implementation while supported by a numerical modelling platform, recently developed by the applicant’s group. It has two major objectives and activities, namely 1) to investigate the changes in flow fields and heat transfer when burners are replaced by different electrification options, and (2) to develop a highly-flexible high temperature heat supply system from electricity using solid heat carriers.
Qualifications
In order to be eligible for the position you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related subjects. A doctoral degree awarded no more than five years before the application deadline provides a useful qualification.
It is desirable that the applicant has documented experience and abilities in the following areas (listed by the order of importance). Please make sure to explicitly refer to these points in the letter of motivation.
- Documented knowledge in heat transfer inside furnaces and boilers
- Documented knowledge in experimental or modelling methods in related research fields.
- Documented experience in producing scientific publications,
- Good knowledge in the English language and good oral and written proficiency,
- A good team player with the ability to take initiatives.
