Luleå University of Technology is now establishing a new research subject, Production Systems. The subject will be placed in the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics, at the Division of Product and Production Development.
The subject will contribute to teaching in several Master of Science in Engineering programmes, with a particular emphasis on Mechanical Engineering. The subject will also conduct doctoral education. The new subject and the Head of Subject are expected to collaborate with a number of other subjects and centres at the university. The subject is also expected to build up laboratory resources.
Subject description
Production Systems focuses on the analysis, design, management, and continuous improvement of industrial production systems and value streams within manufacturing and process industries. The subject encompasses the development of production systems, with a particular focus on flexibility and adaptability under changing technological and societal conditions.
Responsibilities
The appointment as Professor and Head of Subject includes overall responsibility for leading and developing the subject, including research, doctoral education, and education at first- and second-cycle level. This position includes a particular responsibility to secure funding for activities and establish connections with external stakeholders.
A central responsibility is to establish and develop the new research subject Production Systems over the long term. This includes building a strong research and educational environment, developing doctoral education and laboratory resources, and creating national and international collaborations with academia, research institutes, and industry. The Head of Subject is expected to create favourable conditions for doctoral students, staff, and students to develop and contribute to the long-term development of the subject.
The appointment as Professor and Head of Subject is a permanent position.
Eligibility
A person is eligible for appointment as Professor if they have demonstrated both scholarly and pedagogical competence. Equal care shall be given to the assessment of pedagogical and scholarly competence.
To meet the requirements for appointment as Professor, the applicant must:
- be distinguished in their subject area and have conducted scholarly activity of high international standard, demonstrating clear progression in quality;
- have a total scholarly output that, in quantity, corresponds to at least three doctoral theses, including the doctoral thesis itself;
- demonstrate academic leadership, including:
- experience of research-related trust-based assignments such as expert reviewer, opponent, and/or member of a grading committee;
- experience of leading research projects;
- experience of successfully applying for and obtaining external funding for research projects as principal applicant in competitive processes;
- experience of internal assignments within a university;
- experience of pedagogical leadership;
- have experience of supervision at doctoral level and, unless there are special reasons, have been principal supervisor for at least one doctoral student continuously from admission to the doctoral degree;
- demonstrate pedagogical competence through reflected experience, teaching skill, and teaching development;
- demonstrate an ability to collaborate with the surrounding community, including:
- making new knowledge available to the surrounding community;
- integrating societal needs into research and/or educational contexts.
Additional merit criteria
In addition to the eligibility requirements for Professor, special importance will be attached to leadership ability in recruitment to the position of Professor and Head of Subject, including:
- experience of personnel responsibility and staff development;
- self-awareness and the ability to reflect on one's own leadership experience;
- experience of budget responsibility or other financial responsibility.

- scholarly competence;
- pedagogical competence;
- ability to lead and develop activities;
- other assessment criteria.
Other assessment criteria
These are weighted in descending order:
- the degree of such competence as is required for eligibility;
- ability to secure external research and development funding;
- ability to contribute to the subject's, division's, department's, and university's management groups and development;
- experience of personnel responsibility and staff development, including experience of leading and developing both junior and senior staff;
- administrative competence of relevance to the subject matter and the duties included in the appointment;
- ability to collaborate within the university, with partners, and with the surrounding community;
- ability to communicate research and development work;
- ability to teach in Swedish and/or English. Within a three-year period, we would preferably like you to be able to communicate in Swedish. Luleå University of Technology offers tailored Swedish language courses;
- experience of international, and in particular European, collaborative projects.
Personal qualities
Great importance will be attached to personal qualities. Collaborative ability, communication skills, and a results-oriented approach are examples of qualities we are looking for. Most of the Heads of Subject at the department are currently men; therefore, we particularly welcome female applicants.
