Postdoctoral Scholarship in Electromechanical Engineering

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of computer vision and modelling for biomedical applications.
  • This project focuses on developing finite element models and AI-driven solutions to improve perforator mapping through dynamic infrared thermography (DIRT) in breast reconstruction surgeries.
  • The core of the project is the integration of AI techniques with advanced infrared imaging to enhance the detection and evaluation of perforators—critical blood vessels used in Deep Inferior Epigastric artery Perforator (DIEP) flap surgeries.
  • By improving the precision of perforator selection, the project aims to minimize risks of tissue necrosis and optimize surgical outcomes.
  • You will work on the development of machine learning algorithms that analyze thermal data and predict vascular performance, significantly contributing to the automation of medical imaging processes.
  • More info can be found at https://invilab.be/research/medical-imaging-and-healthcare/breast-reconstruction-surgery
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Department of Electromechanical Engineering.
  • You will support the execution of projects on imaging with industry partners.
  • You will assist in the supervision of Master’s students.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
  • You have knowledge in finite element modelling or machine learning for vision. Hands-on experience with image acquisitions and different types of cameras (visible, infrared) is a plus.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You have good written and spoken communication skills. You can speak and write fluently in English. Knowledge of Dutch is not required.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What We Offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
  • As a doctoral researcher, you will have access to a wide and varied range of courses and an educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
