Offer Description
The Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Resources, Institute of Statistics is currently seeking a Postgraduate Research Associate.
Extent of employment: 30 hours per week
Duration of employment: 1st of October 2026, limited to 28th of February 2027
Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1
Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least € 2.832,10 (payable 14 times per year)
Responsibilities
- Involvement in teaching introductory courses in statistics and data science
- Contribution to the institute’s research in applied statistics, data science, and explainable machine learning
- Preparation and presentation of research results at scientific events (e.g., meetings, conferences), as well as assistance in preparing publications and teaching materials
- Participation in research proposals, grant applications, and literature reviews
- Authoring and preparing scientific publications
Required skills and qualifications
- Diploma degree in a related discipline with a strong mathematical-numerical emphasis (e.g. statistics, data science, BOKU programme with a statistics specialisation) or other equivalent university degree
- Language skills: Excellent German and English
- Requirements include methodological competence in statistical modeling and data science, as well as a foundational background in environmental or geosciences
- Excellent knowledge of statistics and data science
- Programming skills (e.g. R, Python)
Desired skills and qualifications
- Teaching experience and pedagogical skills
- Experience contributing to research projects
- Experience analyzing complex data structures (e.g., spatiotemporal climate data)
- Teamwork skills and a high degree of independence
