Minimum Qualifications
- MD or DO with board certification in Pediatrics (Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, or General Pediatrics with relevant experience preferred)
- Minimum 3-5 years of clinical experience in developmental pediatrics or a related field
Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a clinical or academic setting
- Strong knowledge of early childhood development, neurodevelopmental disorders, and early intervention systems
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary or integrated care model
- Background in high-risk infant follow-up programs or NICU graduate care
- Experience with care coordination and family-centered support services
- Familiarity with public health programs, IDEA Part C, or community-based services for young children
- Bilingual or multicultural experience is a plus
License/Certification Required: Unrestricted medical license in North Carolina

The Department of Public Health is currently accredited as a standalone Baccalaureate program by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and is seeking accreditation for its new MPH program. The department currently supports 10 faculty with diverse research and practice backgrounds, including the Blue Cross of NC distinguished endowed professor of Public Health. The department supports approximately 140 undergraduate and 37 graduate students. It also enjoys numerous strong, long-term relationships with regional health providers and public health agencies.
Appalachian State University's Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of lives of individuals, families, and communities through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration, and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and clinical outreach. The BCHS supports over 3,400 students in nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs, organized into six academic departments. The programs are located in Boone in the Holmes Convocation Center and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, the cornerstone of Boone's Wellness District. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness is seeking a Practitioner in Residence (Department of Public Health) and Medical Director, for its new Growing Well Development Clinic.
The Practitioner in Residence / Medical Director will provide clinical leadership, strategic oversight, supervision of allied health professionals, and operational guidance for the Growing Well Developmental Clinic. This role will ensure the highest standards of care in developmental pediatrics, drive evidence-based practices, and foster collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to optimize outcomes for high-risk infants and young children. The key responsibilities include:
- Lead case conferences and clinical teaching/oversight.
- Serve as mentor for Social Work, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Kinesiology, and Public Health students.
- Provide leadership for developmental screenings, assessments, and treatment planning.
- Provide direct medical care and supervise and support advanced practice and allied health providers involved in the care of children with or at risk for developmental delays.
- Oversee the high-risk infant follow-up program, ensuring timely developmental monitoring and intervention referrals.
- Ensure the use of evidence-based tools for screening and diagnosing autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, and other developmental conditions.
- Collaborate with therapists, family navigators, students, and social workers to ensure cohesive, family-centered care.
- Develop and maintain clinical protocols and quality standards for developmental services.
- Participate in strategic planning to expand and improve program offerings.
- Serve as a liaison with community organizations, healthcare providers, and early intervention programs.
- Provide education and training to staff on developmental pediatrics and emerging best practices.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards
