Description
The Family and Human Development program within the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar in family and community relational health in historically and systemically marginalized populations, with attention to translational and community-engaged efforts that promote health and well-being, broadly defined, in these populations. For example, we seek scholars with programs of research focused on the association between relational health – among communities, families, and/or peers – and mental and/or physical health and well-being among families, youth, adolescents and young adult populations who experience marginalization. We are particularly interested in programs of research focused on historically and systemically marginalized groups that incorporate a strengths-based perspective. This position is to start in August of 2025. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent in Family and Human Development or a related developmental and/or family science discipline by the time of the appointment. The candidate should be someone who can both benefit from and potentially build upon the strengths of the Family and Human Development program, including, but not limited to, childhood and adolescent development; culture, ethnicity, and race; contextual factors/interventions; children, youth, and families who experience marginalization; family systems; and quantitative methods.
The Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics (SSFD), part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (The College), is an innovative interdisciplinary academic unit that engages in a variety of approaches to study society, institutions, communities, families, and individuals. Central to SSFD’s mission is to conduct research of public value, and our research strives to build knowledge that can address society’s most pressing issues. Many of the Family and Human Development Program’s faculty focus their scholarship on ways to reduce community, family and developmental inequities and promote strengths in these domains. Faculty research addresses topics such as: children’s socio-emotional, physical, behavioral, and academic development; familial and peer relationships across childhood, adolescence, and the transition to adulthood; and health and well-being. We are looking for a scholar who can strengthen the identity of the Family and Human Development program. Additionally, building on our growing Latinx student population, ASU’s recent designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution, and our location in the Southwest, we seek to grow our faculty expertise in advancing knowledge in partnership with Latinx communities. We also recognize the need to use innovative methods to study social relationships and social networks and their influences at the dyadic, group, network, and societal levels which complements FHDs methodological strengths.
The postdoctoral scholars selected will join a cohort of 10-15 other postdoctoral fellows at ASU as part of the Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The goal of the program is to support outstanding Ph.D. recipients who have substantial potential to advance the ASU Charter as they develop their careers and seek a future tenure-track appointment at ASU.This presidential postdoctoral program seeks applicants whose professional preparedness, experience, and accomplishments are informed by experiences working with and within groups historically underrepresented or underserved in higher education in the United States. Where pools of qualified applicants are strong, priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate, through prior actions and achievements, intentional and actioned commitment to inclusive excellence through research, teaching, mentorship, and/or service.
The Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics has committed to providing individualized mentorship and career development to ensure the scholar is well prepared to succeed in a future tenure-track appointment. Career development and community building will also occur through programmatic support at the ASU Graduate College’s Postdoctoral Affairs Office.
